La
Ty is a Scholarship student from Australia, a Business Executive, and a
Part-Time Professor. He got a full scholarship for Master-Degree in Organization
and Management Studies at Australia in age of 21. Currently, he is a Business
Executive at Sumitomo Corporation, a Japanese trading company and Lecturer at
Norton University of Cambodia.
Ty
was born in 1988 in Koh Kong province. He is a son of one small entrepreneur
family in Koh Kong. He has one elder sister and two elder brothers. Together
with his sister, migrated to Phnom Penh when he was 6 year-old after his dad started
a business Cambodia. Ty went to Wat Koh High School and he became one of the
top students. After finishing high school, Ty continued his bachelor degree at
Norton University, major in Business Management.
During
his university year, Ty became a remarkable student and was praised by his professors
for the past four years. He studied hard and gradually ranked First in Business
Department in his 4th Year. Beside his outstanding academic performance,
Ty had also experienced managing business since he is son of a beverage
manufacturing family. He was the Operation Manager and controls the operation
process for his family business between his study times.
In
2009, after graduating from Norton University with outstanding academic
achievement, Ty had the intention to continue his Master-Degree abroad,
specifically in Australia. He knew that Australia Government offered academic
scholarships annually for Cambodian students, so he began to ask for
information and prepare necessary document. He took IELTS test to see if he had
passed the English language requirement for overseas study. Ty achieved IELTS
score of 7.0 and satisfied all the scholarship requirements. As a result, he
was offered a full scholarship at The University of New South Wales in
Australia for Two Years.
Study
life in a different environment started off fine since he has sufficient
language skills and quickly adapted to new environment; however, Ty still faced
communication barriers due to accents and difficulty adjusting to new culture. Living
overseas alone can be boring; he found himself an interesting Part-time job as a
Customer Service at the Australia Turf Club, a horse racing club. The horse
racing was an enjoyable experience to him since normally it could only be seen
on TV in Cambodia. After studying and working for quite period of time, he
managed to make himself at home and feeling more comfortable with Australian
culture and society, but not without regularly communicating with his family
and friends back home in Cambodia.
Even
his learning is going well; Ty still faced some trouble at times with course at
university by needing more time since he is not a native student. However, he managed
to follow up with the majority of his classes. “Well, there is nothing free. I
set high goals for my life, so I don’t feel upset or defeated with my hard-work
because I believe that hard work pays off later,” he emphasized. According to
him, even it is a little bit hard, but it’s really an unforgettable experience
for him to get a chance to be self-dependent.
In
2011, Ty successfully graduated and reunited with his family in Phnom Penh. As
soon as he got home, he got a job offer from auDirect Investment Company, a new
investment firm from Australia. However, after working for about a month, he
felt that it wasn’t the right job for him, and then he started seeking for
other job. Several companies contacted him for job offerings with quite
competitive wages and benefit packages, but finally, he selected Sumitomo
Corporation, a Japanese trading company, as a Business Executive position since
it is an international company with huge opportunity to grow and able to offer
him the chance to work overseas.
After
working for a year, he thought it would be interesting to share his knowledge
and experiences to other people. Therefore, he contacted his previous professor
who agreed to offer him the Lecturer profession right after his Master
Graduation, to see if he can start his academic career since he has sufficient
experience and ability after one year of working experience. After the
discussion, he decided to take an entry exam for becoming a Part-time professor
at Norton University. Recently, he has just finished his first semester with
very good feedbacks from his students. Ty will continue this profession for the
next semesters.
After
all of those hard works, Ty has achieved his goals and his life becomes more
independent. He has turned into a real adult that teenagers can look up for;
besides, he gets an opportunity to work in multicultural environment with
overseas staff as well as local governor and businessmen. “Along with all these
great achievement, it feels great to have independent source of income, but it
also means I have more responsibilities to support my family” he reiterated
Even
if he is happy with what he has accomplished, he still hopes that he has time
and chance to fulfill his next plan. “I always want to work overseas for a few
years to get more experiences and learn more about different cultures.” he
added “My company has many overseas departments, so I believe if I work hard,
the opportunity will come to me.”
Ty
has grown into a citizen that our country can be proud of and what he had
accomplished is what every teenager would like to achieve. He has an advice
that he wants to share to those teenagers if they hope to follow his step: “Just
study hard, it may sound normal to you, but according to my experience, it is
the only way to reach your goal.”
